The second edition of the fledgling Balkans Shiatsu Summit will take place in April 2026 in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. It will focus on the themes of insomnia, depression, irritability and anxiety, disorders which constantly affect a large proportion of the European population. We’re delighted that so many European teachers have responded to our call, and we’ve selected four of them for their expertise in these areas. And like the first edition, countries outside the Euro zone will benefit from a fee commensurate with their standard of living, so practitioners from all over Europe, and in particular the Balkan countries, will be able to come and take part.
Why a Balkan Shiatsu Summit?
When it was created under the aegis of Ivan Bel, the aim was to help all the Balkan countries to develop Shiatsu, and to enable practitioners from different countries, often far apart, to meet each other and great European teachers at a price accessible to all. It was with this vision that the members of the Bosnia Shiatsu School in Sarajevo created the very first edition of an original, simple and humane summit, with the support and presence of Chris McAlister, President of the European Shiatsu Federation (ESF). For this second edition, the Circle of Shiatsu Enthusiasts Association, made up of Croatian volunteers, has organized this new gathering in the Croatian capital, Zagreb, with the help of improved communication. The website has been completely revamped and translated into 8 languages, an effective Facebook page , and an Instagram account. Don’t hesitate to join them.

The teachers

Austrian-born Mike Mandl, one of Europe’s most renowned teachers and a practitioner for over 30 years, needs no introduction. He heads the International Hara Shiatsu Academy in Vienna, which has been working for 25 years with clinical institutions to create a synthesis of Western and Eastern medicine. Mike is also director of the 5th European Shiatsu Congress, founder of the Vienna shiatsu Summit, author of several best-selling books on Shiatsu and TCM, and an international lecturer giving courses throughout Europe.

Fanny Roque is a Shiatsu practitioner and teacher, specializing in support for people suffering from cancer or pathologies linked to the menstrual cycle. As President of the French Federation of Traditional Shiatsu (FFST), she promotes a rigorous, evidence-based and accessible approach to shiatsu. For several years, she has worked directly in hospitals, notably in chemotherapy units, where she helps patients manage the side effects of treatment and improve their general well-being. Deeply committed to education, she runs training programs for healthcare professionals and Shiatsu practitioners.

With over four decades dedicated to wellness, Paul Banester brings a rich combination of experience and depth to his teaching. At 64, he has been practicing yoga for 40 years and sharing his knowledge as a yoga teacher for 20. His journey into Zen Shiatsu began 30 years ago, and for the past two decades he has been working professionally in the field, with over 10 years’ experience teaching Shiatsu. Paul’s skills are enriched by additional studies in Thai massage, osteothai, craniosacral therapy and Ayurvedic massage. He teaches in various shiatsu schools rather than running his own, enjoying the exchanges and diversity this brings.

The fourth teacher is Croatian. Sanja brings to her work over 25 years of dedicated Shiatsu practice. For over a decade, she has been active as both program director and teacher at the International Shiatsu School of Croatia, where she developed the curriculum and, together with a team of teachers, has guided new generations of practitioners.
Rooted in the Zen Shiatsu approach and trained as a holistic counselor, she is particularly interested in the integration of body and mind, exploring how physical touch engages both inner experience and energy flow, how challenges and stress affect the body and can also become opportunities for transformation. She is passionate about her role as a Shiatsu ‘ambassador’, teaching beginners meridian awareness and introducing them to the transformative power of therapeutic touch.
This year, she founded the Shiatsu Krug School, a collaborative educational circle dedicated to honoring the transformative link between physical touch and psychological presence.
The program
Insomnia is one of the most widespread sleep disorders in modern society. It’s more than just ‘sleeping badly’: it’s a persistent difficulty in falling asleep, staying asleep or getting a truly restful sleep. According to several international surveys, around 30% of adults claim to suffer from symptoms of insomnia, and almost 10% experience a chronic form that profoundly affects their daily lives.
There are many causes: stress, anxiety, irregular pace of life, prolonged exposure to screens, pain, hormonal changes or disturbed eating habits. Insomnia often sets in silently, then creates a vicious circle: the more a person fears not sleeping, the harder it becomes to get to sleep. Paul Banester’s workshop will address this common disorder.

Anxiety is much more than just a temporary stress: it can become a profound disorder that affects daily life. According to the World Health Organization, around 4.4% of the world’s population suffers from an anxiety disorder, equivalent to over 359 million people. This feeling of constant worry can manifest itself in a variety of ways – through panic attacks, agitation, obsessive thoughts, or even physical symptoms such as palpitations or digestive disorders.
Anxiety is not limited to a difficult moment: when it is long-lasting and intense, it can seriously impair concentration, social relationships, work and general well-being. Unfortunately, many people do not have access to appropriate treatment. That’s what Mike Mandl’s training course is all about.

In this workshop led by Fanny Roque, we’ll look at how to combat depression. Depression is much more than a low mood: it’s a profound mood disorder that affects thinking, emotions, energy and sometimes even self-image. The World Health Organization estimates that around 5% of adults worldwide live with depression, making it one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. This figure underlines just how widespread this disorder is… and yet still too often misunderstood.
Depression can manifest itself in many ways: loss of interest in usual activities, persistent fatigue, intense sadness, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite, or feelings of worthlessness. It is not a sign of a lack of willpower, but the result of a complex combination of biological, emotional, psychological and sometimes social factors.

Finally, thanks to Sanja Novko, we’ll be talking about irritability. Irritability is an emotional state that is often underestimated, yet it can be one of the first signs of an inner imbalance. It manifests as heightened sensitivity, a disproportionate reaction to everyday stimuli or difficulty in dealing with frustration. According to some behavioral psychology studies, nearly 60% of adults report regular bouts of irritability linked to stress, fatigue or sleep disorders.
This condition never appears by chance: it frequently reflects an overworked nervous system. Lack of rest, accumulated tension, professional pressure, relational conflicts or an unstable lifestyle can all contribute to this emotional hyper-reactivity. Irritability then becomes a message from the body: a warning signal that internal resources are running out.
